Sustainability at Maqu
Maqu was launched in Berlin in 2016 when designer Marisa Fuentes Prado realized the need for sustainable production of high quality garments. By 2018 the label managed to increase the certified organic cotton use to 100%. We also use natural fabrics like Lyocell/Tencel and Hemp.
Bespoke up-cycled pieces and limited editions form a particularly important part of the label. This zero waste approach allows for exciting creations. At the Maqu Store & Studio in Berlin we are open to working with customers in breathing new life into their favourite old items of clothing.
All our fabrics are evaluated according to current standards of sustainable and ethical production. Our evaluation includes environmental and social aspects. Keeping our main production in Berlin allows us to be more regionally connected.
Wherever possible we use existing materials to minimize waste production and to reduce our CO2 emissions.
Our team of producers and manufactures have been with us since our very first collection. Personal contact is particularly important for learning about the specific needs of the producers. We pay great attention to the working conditions and fair compensation of our staff, while ensuring our standards in quality are met.
Shipment of Maqu pieces is plastic-free in recycled paper cartons using the GoGreen option to offset the CO2 emissions of transport.
The Maqu Store & Studio runs exclusively on Greenpeace Energy.
The label always strives to make further improvements in sustainability. We recently launched a collection of alpaca sweaters, working with small scale farms in Marisa’s native Peru. She will be travelling to Peru in April, with a view to increase the use of old weaving techniques combining the best of tradition with modern technology.
